All materials which do not have a backing sheet have to be placed on a carrier sheet to keep the design in place. For example, labels will not need a carrier sheet. A single carrier sheet can be used many times but to prolong life, ensure the cutting blades are set to the correct height which will vary depending on the thickness of materials being cut.
